Why Oral Surgery
Dr. Jones says that he had originally planned to go to medical school, but ended up meeting a dentist who allowed him to shadow. Dr. Jones enjoyed being in the dental office so much that he changed his course and decided to go to dental school after that experience. From there, he says he organically chose oral surgery as he progressed through dental school. When he originally attended dental school, he didn't have the ambition of becoming an oral surgeon. However, as he gained experience in the oral and maxillofacial surgery service at the University of Michigan Medical Center, he was drawn to oral surgery so much that he ended up choosing the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He calls it going "full circle" since he went from medical to dental and ultimately chose a hospital-based oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program! In his surgical training he learned full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgery from complex head and neck reconstruction, trauma, cleft-lip and palate and corrective jaw surgery to pathology, dentoalveolar surgery, and oral rehabilitation with dental implants. He loves the complexity of the scope of oral surgery and it’s challenges. He has never looked back.
